The 2014 US Open is shaping up to be a very interesting tournament.  For me the main storyline is Roger Federer and his chance for another Grand Slam title.  Roger was so close at Wimbledon, losing an amazing 5 setter to world number 1 Novak Djokovic.  Going into that 5th set many fans though this was Roger’s chance at another Grand Slam, but it wasn’t to be.  I for one though still think he has a shot in a few more and his form right now leads me to believe he has a chance at the upcoming US Open.

US Open 2014 Odds

Here are the odds for some of the favourites to win the upcoming US Open.  I found the odds at 5Dimes.eu.

  • Novak Djokovic +130
  • Andy Murray +450
  • Roger Federer +700
  • Rafael Nadal +750
  • Stanislas Wawrinka +1500
  • Grigor Dimitrov +1600
  • Milos Raonic +2500
  • Jo-Wilfried Tsonga +2800

These are the 8 players that I consider have a chance at winning the US Open and the oddsmakers seem to agree.

My Thoughts On The Odds

Djokovic obviously deserves to the favourite heading into this tournament.  He hasn’t played his best tennis in the last couple tournaments, but he is still the best player in the world when he’s on his game and he usually finds a way to bring it during the Grand Slams.  He’s been in the finals of the US Open the last 4 years, but he’s only won once.  You can be sure he will be ready this year and the fact that Nadal is coming back from injury and Murray isn’t having a great year really makes him the big favourite in this tourney.

I’m surprised Murray is there at +450.  He hasn’t even played in final yet this year let alone won one.  He seems like he is still trying to find his game and I don’t expect it to magically appear at the US Open.

Federer at +700 is a great bet in my opinion.  Like I said in the introduction I really like Federer heading into this tournament.  He almost beat Djokovic at Wimbledon and he definitely has the ability to beat anyone on tour.  Nadal does seem to have his number though so it will be advantageous for Federer if Nadal goes out early or he’s on the other side of the draw.

Then there’s Nadal at +750.  He’s been out since Wimbledon and actually hasn’t played a hard court tournament since March.  That said if he can get through the first week he could be a threat.  Nadal won last year’s US Open and also won in 2010.  He definitely has the ability, it will just be interesting to see if he’s in game shape.  At these odds it’s hard not to like him though.

After the big four my favourite play for the remaining guys is Raonic at +2500.  The Canadian is playing some good tennis of late and if he can just get over the hump and start beating some of the top guys he is close to competing for a Grand Slam title.

Wawrinka and Tsonga are weird ones because they are capable of winning big matches over top guys, but then they can also lose early in the tournament as well.  I would steer clear of these two because they are such wild cards.

For those of you who aren’t used to betting on tennis I suggest checking out BetOnIt.org’s tennis page that explains the various tennis bets that can be made and how to place them.  It’s a very valuable page for new tennis bettors and if you plan on wagering on the US Open it is very helpful.
