Thrills of the 2017 Cox Plate Carnival

Run over 2040 metres underweight conditions, the W.S. Cox Plate is a Group 1 thoroughbred horse race for horses aged 3 years and older, held annually at the Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in late October. Known as the race “where legends are made”, the Cox Plate is the second richest weight-for-age race with a purse of AU$3,000,000, behind the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

This year the Cox Plate Carnival will once again see the finest thoroughbred race horses take to the track, starting off with the 1200-metre Group 1 Manikato Stakes on Friday, Cox Plate Eve, followed by the main event on Saturday.

Will Winx Make Cox Plate History?

The 2017 Cox Plate is set to be one of the most memorable in the race’s 97-year history, as spectators and punters alike will be waiting with bated breath to see if champion mare, Winx, will join Kingston Town’s legendary ranks and become only the 2nd horse in history to win the Cox Plate three times consecutively.

Winx recently won her 20th consecutive race at the George Main Stakes on Saturday, 16th September and is set to make her next appearance at the Turnbull Stakes at the beginning of October before heading to Melbourne in preparation of the Cox Plate. Here’s hoping Winx takes the Turnbull Stakes to make the Cox Plate race even more memorable.

Non-Stop Cox Plate Carnival Entertainment

While the Cox Plate race weekend is far and wide the main event, there is plenty of fun to be had at the Cox Plate Carnival, a 5-day event that sees a superb blend of fashion, horse racing, colour, and fun.

Kick off the action on Tuesday with the time-honoured ‘Breakfast with the Best’ which allows the public to witness the Manikato Stakes and Cox Plate hopefuls go through their final preparations and test themselves on the tight valley track – which could see you changing your Cox Plate betting predictions, followed by the ‘Barrier Draw Breakfast’ which provides a kinetic atmosphere unlike any other, and finish the day off with the ‘A Legendary Night’ event which offers the opportunity to rub shoulders with living legends of Cox Plate history.

From there on we slide headlong into the fashion, glitz and glamour of the Cox Plate Carnival with the Ladies Lunch on Wednesday which gives attendees a peek into the entertainment to come, celebrities, a fashion show, and gift bags leave all counting down the minutes to the excitement of Friday night.

Friday’s Manikato Stakes Night

Raced across 1200-metres and referred to as the ‘Night of Nights’, the Manikato Stakes provides plenty of excitement on the evening before the main Cox Plate race, and many say it sets the tone for the rest of the carnival. With a purse of AU$1,000,000, the race isn’t as lucrative as the Cox Plate, but this weight-for-age Group 1 thoroughbred race for horses aged three years always draws an excitable crowd.

If action, adventure, and excitement are what you’re after, be sure to head to the Valley Precinct which offers the perfect blend of racing and entertainment in one of the best locations on the course. With live entertainment, food trucks showcasing Melbourne’s best, and a front row seat to all the racing action, the Valley Precinct is definitely the place to be.
